A Diploma in Operation Theatre Technology (DOTT), also called the OT Technician course, is a 2-year paramedical diploma that trains you to prepare the operation theatre, sterilise surgical instruments, manage anaesthesia and monitoring equipment, and assist the surgical team before, during and after surgery. At Om Sai Para Medical College (OSPMI), Ambala, the course is open to 10+2 pass students, costs ₹55,000 per year, and includes daily practical training inside a working hospital.

What does an OT technician actually do?
Every surgery depends on a team. The surgeon and anaesthetist lead, but the operation theatre technician makes sure the room, the instruments and the machines are ready and safe. A trained OT technician:
- Prepares and sterilises the operation theatre and surgical instruments (autoclave and chemical sterilisation).
- Sets up and checks the anaesthesia workstation, suction, cautery, OT lights and patient monitors.
- Positions the patient safely and helps with draping and scrubbing.
- Hands instruments and supplies to the surgical team during the procedure.
- Maintains infection control, counts swabs and instruments, and handles biomedical waste correctly.
- Helps shift and monitor the patient in the recovery area.
Because hospitals cannot run surgeries without skilled OT staff, qualified technicians are needed in government hospitals, private hospitals, eye hospitals, day-care surgery centres and multi-speciality chains.
Who is eligible for the OT technician diploma?
You can apply after passing 10+2 from any recognised board. Students from any stream can join, although Science students usually find anatomy and physiology easier in the first year. You must be at least 17 years old at the time of admission. Admission for the 2026-27 batch is through direct merit counselling.

The syllabus combines classroom theory with hands-on hospital work. Topics typically covered across the two years include:

After the diploma you can work as an OT technician, OT assistant, anaesthesia technician assistant or CSSD technician. Common employers include:

- Eye hospitals and day-care surgery centres (OTA roles)
- Nursing homes and trauma centres
Pay depends on the city, the hospital and your experience. Technicians who add specialisation (cardiac, neuro or ortho OT) or complete a degree usually move into senior and supervisory roles faster. Can I do the OT technician course after 12th Arts or Commerce?
Yes. The diploma accepts 10+2 pass students from any stream. Science is preferred but not compulsory. The B.Sc. OT degree, however, needs PCB or PCM.
What is the difference between OTT and DOTT?
Both names refer to the operation theatre technology/technician diploma. “DOTT” is short for Diploma in Operation Theatre Technology; “OTT” is used for Operation Theatre Technician or Technology.
Is NEET required for the OT technician course?
