Why are dialysis technicians in demand?

Patients with chronic kidney disease often need hemodialysis two or three times a week, for years. Each session needs a trained technician to prepare the machine, connect and monitor the patient, and handle problems quickly. As more hospitals and standalone dialysis centres open across India, the need for skilled, reliable technicians keeps growing.

What does a dialysis technician do?

• Prepares the hemodialysis machine, dialyzer and blood lines, and checks alarms and safety settings.
• Records the patient’s weight, blood pressure and pulse before, during and after dialysis.
• Assists with vascular access (fistula, graft or catheter) under supervision and keeps it infection-free.
• Monitors the session and responds to low blood pressure, cramps and machine alarms.
• Runs dialyzer reprocessing where permitted, and disinfects machines between patients.
• Checks the RO (reverse osmosis) water treatment plant, because dialysis water must meet strict purity standards.

A typical day for a dialysis technician

1. Before the shift: check the RO water plant readings, disinfect machines and prepare dialyzers and blood lines.
2. Patient arrival: record weight, blood pressure, pulse and temperature; check the fistula or catheter site.
3. Connection: set machine parameters as prescribed by the nephrologist and connect the patient under supervision.
4. Monitoring: observe the patient every few minutes, respond to alarms, cramps or drops in blood pressure.
5. Disconnection and records: complete the session safely, record post-dialysis readings, clean and disinfect the station.
